New Delhi: The Supreme Court of India has bolstered its bench, gaining five new judges. This increases the apex court's strength to 37 judges, just one short of the sanctioned limit now set at 38.

Increase in Sanctioned Strength

The government recently promulgated an ordinance that increased the maximum number of judges for the Supreme Court from 34 to 38. This move is part of a broader effort to enhance judicial processes and ensure greater availability of senior judges.

On Monday, several prominent legal figures were elevated: Venkita Subramani Mohana, Justice Shree Chandrashekhar (formerly Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court), Justice Sheel Nagu (Chief Justice of Punjab & Haryana High Court), Justice Sanjeev Sachdeva (Chief Justice of Madhya Pradesh High Court), and Justice Arun Palli (Chief Justice of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh High Court).

The appointments come as a response to the existing vacancies, with the court now having one post still to be filled after these recent increases.

According to official notifications from the Union Cabinet's Law Ministry, the judges were recommended by the Supreme Court Collegium on May 27, and their positions solidified within four days of approval.
