NEW DELHI: The Andhra Pradesh State Scheduled Castes Commission has ordered urgent action against individuals involved in caste-based abuse towards a police officer in Kurnool district. In response to videos circulating on social media that contained offensive and discriminatory remarks, the commission directed relevant authorities to investigate these incidents and take legal measures under specific statutes.

According to the commission, the videos indicate instances of public humiliation and intimidating behaviors against a Circle Inspector named Sheshayya. As a result, officials were advised to verify the authenticity of the videos, identify those responsible for making derogatory comments, and initiate prompt legal action as per provisions under the Protection of Civil Rights Act 1955, the SC-ST Prevention of Atrocities Act 1989, and relevant sections of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.

The issue came to light after a young man named Satish committed suicide following alleged harassment by the 3-Town police station. His death sparked protests from YSRC leaders, who called for strict action against perpetrators. The incident further prompted Minister Bharat Gupta to react strongly against opposing party stances.

Importance of Constitutional Rights

The chairman of the SC commission, KS Jawahar, emphasized the administration's responsibility to safeguard the constitutional rights of Scheduled Castes and ensure their protection from such discriminatory practices. Any form of abuse or discrimination against marginalized communities, particularly in positions of authority like police officers, is not only unconstitutional but also deeply harmful.

This action taken by the commission aims to instill confidence among members of the Dalit community regarding the safety measures and interventions of government institutions. It underscores the commitment to upholding justice and equality for all citizens.
