Mumbai: The Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) has decided to field candidates for all 17 Legislative Council seats in Maharashtra, intensifying the political competition leading up to the June 18 elections. This decision comes as the ruling Mahayuti alliance grapples with internal disagreements over seat-sharing for the council positions.
During a meeting at Tilak Bhavan, Congress headquarters in Mumbai, MVA leaders including Maharashtra Congress president Harshvardhan Sapkal and NCP (SP) state president Shashikant Shinde discussed initial strategies. The group agreed to contest all 17 seats, noting that local self-government bodies would elect 16 of them while one by-election seat from Nagpur is up for grabs.
In a statement, Mr. Sapkal emphasized the Congress's commitment to protecting democracy and its role in ensuring free and fair elections: "We will jointly contest these Legislative Council elections to safeguard our democratic values and uphold the Constitution against any form of influence or coercion."
MVA's Approach to Election Strategies
The decision to field candidates en masse marks a significant turn, setting up direct competition with the ruling Mahayuti alliance. MVA leaders mentioned that preliminary discussions on seat distribution were held, and another meeting is scheduled in the coming days for final decisions. While the Congress party likely will contest the highest number of seats, the Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena (UBT) and Sharad Pawar's NCP (SP) are also expected to participate.
According to a senior Shiv Sena leader, each seat would be discussed at an upcoming meeting, focusing on winnability. The nomination process for the 17 Legislative Council seats is already underway, with June 1 as the last date for filing nomination papers.
The MVA aims to counter any efforts by the BJP-led Mahayuti government that appear undemocratic or manipulative in nature. In a swipe at the ruling coalition, Sapkal alleged that horse-trading and the use of "money power" had marred local body elections, with attempts being made to lure municipal corporators through advance payments.
