In a significant political development for Maharashtra, six Lok Sabha Members of Parliament (MPs) formerly affiliated with the Shiv Sena (UBT) have officially joined the Shiv Sena faction led by Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde. This transition marks a major political setback for the group headed by Uddhav Thackeray and is expected to alter the parliamentary landscape significantly.
During the induction ceremony held at the Y.B. Chavan Centre in Mumbai, Eknath Shinde hailed the successful completion of what he termed “Operation Tiger”. He emphasized his commitment to fulfilling promises and executing strategic missions effectively. Furthermore, Shinde declared that with this influx of leaders, his faction has solidified its standing as the second-largest political organization in Maharashtra.
Impact of Operation Tiger on Political Landscape
The transition follows a period of heightened internal tension, occurring just five days after the six MPs were notably absent from a critical Shiv Sena (UBT) parliamentary meeting in New Delhi. This absence initially sparked widespread speculation regarding internal divisions, which has now culminated in this formal political shift. The group of MPs includes Sanjay Dina Patil, Sanjay Deshmukh, Sanjay Jadhav, Nagesh Patil-Ashtikar, Omprakash Rajenimbalkar, and Bhausaheb Wakchaure.
Eknath Shinde stated that all necessary constitutional and legal protocols had been finalized to formalize their entry into the faction, which he maintains is the true representative of Balasaheb Thackeray’s ideology. Addressing concerns about the future of these legislators, Shinde assured the new entrants of their value within the organization and confirmed their candidacy for the 2029 Lok Sabha election under the party’s traditional bow-and-arrow symbol.
Reasons Cited for the Political Shift
Following their formal induction, the leaders expressed dissatisfaction with the leadership style of Uddhav Thackeray. Sanjay Dina Patil, representing Mumbai North East, highlighted a perceived lack of internal communication as a primary driver for the split. He suggested that if the party leadership had engaged in active dialogue and addressed grievances sooner, the divide might have been avoided.
Patil also voiced frustrations regarding the internal hierarchy, alleging that the leadership has increasingly favored those who are compliant over strong, independent voices. He argued that the current environment within the Shiv Sena (UBT) structure does not adequately support or value robust leadership, contributing to the growing discontent that led to the successful implementation of “Operation Tiger”.
