Shivakumar's resignation came after his appointment as Chief Minister, and a statement issued indicated that Hariprasad assumed the presidency with immediate effect. General Secretary of All India Congress Committee K.C. Venugopal acknowledged Shivakumar's contributions to the organization before he took over.

B.K. Hariprasad has a diverse background in politics, having served as a Rajya Sabha member multiple times from 1990 through 2014. He held his most recent significant political role as the Leader of Opposition in Council from January 2022 to early 2023.
