Kerala's Left Democratic Front (LDF) has walked out of the state Legislature, accusing the United Democratic Front (UDF) government of stifling a discussion on soaring inflation and fuel prices. The walkout happened during a debate on an adjournment motion regarding rising costs.

Inflation Crisis in Kerala

Pinarayi Vijayan, the leader of the Opposition, argued that the increasing prices of petrol and diesel are creating an unwelcome cost-of-living crisis. He highlighted the dramatic rise in fuel costs from Rs 33.90 in 2004 to Rs 115.49 today, blaming the Centre's policies for exacerbating the issue.

"The increase in petrol and diesel prices has created a very serious crisis. The Chief Minister himself admitted that the situation is likely to worsen further," Vijayan remarked. He went on to say that this hike in fuel costs negatively affects multiple sectors, including agriculture, transportation, hospitality, and small businesses across Kerala.

Vijayan accused successive Central governments of allowing oil companies to make substantial profits without ensuring effective regulation on fuel prices. The Opposition leader also stressed the adverse impact on industries like LPG suppliers, which have seen significant price hikes.

"The hospitality sector is facing severe difficulties because of rising fuel costs. Nearly 70,000 hotels and restaurants in Kerala are under tremendous financial strain," Vijayan stated during his speech.

In response to the growing inflationary pressures, Vijayan demanded urgent action from both state and central governments. He called for a rollback on recent excise duty hikes, urging the government to press the Centre for relief measures.
