KOLKATA: Trinamul Congress leader Abhishek Banerjee has moved the Calcutta High Court, seeking protection from arrest in a case involving allegations of forgery and misuse of signatures by his party's lawmakers. The move comes after allegations were made that signatures of assembly members were forged to claim opposition status in the West Bengal Legislative Assembly, leading to an investigation by the Kolkata Police under the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) rule.

In a bid to safeguard himself from judicial scrutiny, Banerjee approached the vacation bench of Justice Apurba Singha Roy. The court has provisionally granted permission for him to file a petition seeking relief against potential arrest. He is scheduled to return to court on June 5 for further proceedings.

Banerjee had previously sought and received interim protection from the Calcutta High Court in May due to his provocative polling speech targeting Home Minister Amit Shah, which added to his legal woes. Meanwhile, his absence during a summons for questioning on June 1 was attributed to his health condition. However, he recently faced another summons regarding an unrelated primary teachers' recruitment scam case.
