Manoj Jarange-Patil, a prominent Maratha quota activist, announced on Wednesday that he will commence an indefinite hunger strike from May 30 at Antarwali Sarati village in Jalna district. The protest is aimed at pressing the Maharashtra government to implement pending demands related to the issuance of quotas for the Maratha community.

In a statement, Jarange-Patil highlighted the ongoing delay in issuing a Government Resolution (GR) based on the 1818 Satara Gazette, despite assurances given eight months ago. Speaking to reporters, he urged the State government to release the Satara Gazette before proceeding with his protest, stating that the agitation had entered a "decisive phase."

On September 2, 2025, the State government issued a GR implementing the Hyderabad Gazette, thereby enabling members of the Maratha community to apply for Other Backward Classes (OBC) certificates. The Cabinet sub-committee on Maratha reservation, led by Radhakrishna Vikhe-Patil, had directed officials to expedite the report based on the 1818 Satara Gazette demanded by Jarange-Patil. At that time, it was anticipated that another GR similar to the Hyderabad Gazette would follow within a few days.

Harsh Conditions and Personal Stake

Mr. Jarange-Patil stated that his hunger strike will be held without any shelter, food, or water. He warned that if his health deteriorates due to prolonged exposure to heatstroke, the Chief Minister and government will bear responsibility for his condition. Speaking emphatically, he said: "This time, I will not sit under any shelter. There will be no tent and no shade. During the protest, I will give up water, food, and even footwear. Either the government will act, or I will die."

Shiv Sena chief and Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, reacting to Jarange-Patil's announcement, stated that discussions would be held with Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis over his demands. However, no immediate concrete steps have been outlined.

The activist's move is seen as a significant escalation in the ongoing Maratha reservation dispute and has garnered attention across political parties despite their differing stances on the matter.
