DMK MP Kanimozhi Criticizes Centre's Short-Term Solutions for Fuel Crisis

Highlights

  • DMK MP Kanimozhi's criticism of the government's short-term solutions
  • Inadequate Strategic Petroleum Reserves causing concerns
  • Government assurance amidst ongoing West Asia crisis
  • Highlighting the need for immediate action to strengthen reserves

New Delhi, India: In a recent post on X, DMK MP Kanimozhi has criticized the central government for relying on short-term solutions rather than strengthening strategic petroleum reserves. She argues that such actions leave India vulnerable to global oil shocks during crises like the ongoing West Asia situation.

The Concern Over Strategic Petroleum Reserves

Almost two years ago, Kanimozhi raised concerns in Parliament about India's limited reserve capacity and delays in expanding storage infrastructure. She highlighted that with a country of its size, inadequate strategic reserves for barely ten days are alarming.

In August 2024, she questioned the government about why Strategic Petroleum Reserves were insufficient despite rising global instability. Despite acknowledgment, expansion has been slow and delayed, leaving India vulnerable to oil shocks.

Kanimozhi further criticized the government's current strategy, stating that temporary measures continue instead of investing in long-term storage infrastructure. She emphasized the importance of preparedness for future energy security needs.

Government's Actions and Assurances

A day after Kanimozhi's post, the government convened a meeting with the Defence Minister Rajnath Singh to review fuel supplies, fertilizers, and essential commodities. The supply situation in the country was declared normal.

The government assured citizens against panic buying of petrol, diesel, and LPG by stating that India's refining capacity exceeds its current consumption needs.

Public Sector Oil Marketing Companies are currently absorbing significant losses to shield consumers from global fuel price increases. Despite these measures, the focus remains on short-term band-aid solutions rather than long-term strategic planning.
