India’s New Envoy to Bangladesh Resumes Travel Visa Services for Citizens

India has officially moved to restore travel connectivity with Bangladesh as its newly appointed High Commissioner to Dhaka, Dinesh Trivedi, takes charge. Following his formal assumption of office, Trivedi confirmed the resumption of general travel visa services, a development intended to normalize movement between the two nations after a prolonged period of restricted access. The announcement was made shortly after he presented his credentials to the President of Bangladesh, Mohammed Shahabuddin, in a formal ceremony at the presidential palace.

Restoring Travel Ties and Visa Services

The decision to restart visa operations marks a significant shift in the bilateral climate. For the past two years, travel visas for Bangladesh nationals were largely suspended due to heightened security concerns and a period of strained diplomatic relations during the interim administration led by Muhammad Yunus. Dinesh Trivedi, a 76-year-old leader from the Bharatiya Janata Party, is the first politician to serve as India’s envoy in this capacity. During his visit to the Indian Visa Centre in Dhaka, he stated that citizens would be able to submit visa applications starting June 28. These services are expected to be available across five major hubs: Dhaka, Rajshahi, Chattogram, Sylhet, and Khulna, with plans to scale operations in the future.

Diplomatic Context and Future Outlook

The appointment of Trivedi comes at a pivotal time for both nations. On the day preceding his arrival, the Indian government conferred upon him the status of a Union minister for ceremonial purposes, reflecting the importance of his mission in Dhaka. Trivedi arrived in the country via the Benapole-Petrapole land border on June 12, succeeding career diplomat Pranay Kumar Verma. His predecessor’s tenure was marked by significant political upheaval in Bangladesh, including the ouster of the former government in August 2024 and the subsequent swearing-in of Bangladesh Nationalist Party leader Tarique Rahman as prime minister earlier this year.

While general travel visas are set to resume, the embassy has clarified that urgent medical visas will continue to be processed under humanitarian considerations, ensuring that critical care accessibility remains unaffected. The diplomatic community views this restoration of travel as a necessary step toward stabilizing the relationship between India and Bangladesh, signaling a renewed commitment to easing public transit and fostering closer cooperation between the two neighbors following years of uncertainty.
