In a significant move that has drawn immediate attention from the political front, Udhayanidhi Stalin, the Leader of the Opposition in Tamil Nadu's assembly, has written to Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay, urging him to intervene and prevent 152 vacant super-specialty medical seats from being transferred to the All-India Quota (AIQ). This development is not only a political tussle but also poses a serious threat to Tamil Nadu's public healthcare system.

Stating his concerns in a letter sent on Thursday, Stalin cited the Supreme Court's directive dated 29th May which requires the vacant seats to be surrendered to AIQ. He highlighted that during the March counselling process for 430 Super Speciality medical seats, only 63 were filled, thereby leaving 152 seats unoccupied.

Legal Battleground and Previous Decisions

The DMK government had successfully presented arguments during hearings on April 8, 10, and 16 to prevent the seats from being transferred to AIQ. The opposition noted that Tamil Nadu's reserved seats for in-service government doctors were crucial for ensuring quality healthcare across various critical conditions.

In an impactful letter, Stalin explained, 'The late Kalaignar introduced this reservation for in-service government doctors pursuing Super Specialty medical courses back in 2000. This has since become a cornerstone of providing advanced medical care in Tamil Nadu, including in rural areas.' He warned that the AIQ transfer could significantly affect both doctors and patients.

Stalin emphasized the dire consequences if these seats were filled with candidates from outside the state through AIQ: 'This decision will not only adversely impact government doctors but also undermine advanced treatment provided in hospitals for various diseases, including cardiac ailments, cancer, neurological disorders, and other critical conditions.'

The chief minister's intervention could potentially avert what is seen by many as a setback to Tamil Nadu's public healthcare system.
