PETA Proposes Mechanical Elephant for Muharram Procession

Highlights

  • Proposed Solution: PETA India offers a mechanical elephant to replace live ones used during Muharram processes.
  • Reasoning: Protects live elephants from distress, avoids safety risks, and aligns with religious teachings.
  • Prior Instances: Previous incidents involving live elephants at the same event highlight potential dangers and animal unrest.
  • Success Stories: More than 30 mechanical elephants are now being used by temples nationwide.

Hyderabad: Actress Zahrah S. Khan, alongside PETA India, has proposed a mechanical elephant as an alternative to live elephants in Hyderabad's annual Bibi-ka-Alam Muharram procession. This initiative aims to replace the use of real elephants during communal events and follows a tragic incident where a woman died after being crushed by an elephant earlier this year.

The appeal for the mechanical elephant cites multiple reasons, chief among them is the distress caused to live elephants in captivity. In recent years, incidents involving live elephants at Muharram processions have raised concerns, including the aggressive behavior of elephants like Gajalakshmi and Madhuri.

Life-size Elephant Model

The mechanical elephant designed by PETA India replicates many movements of a real elephant. It can control its ears, eyes, tail, and even raise its trunk to spray water. Operating on a wheeled platform, the model is capable of carrying individuals for rides, ensuring an interactive yet safe experience.

"The Quran and Hadith emphasize mercy and kindness towards living beings," stated Khan in her letter to the Telangana State Waqf Board. She argued that using a mechanical elephant would set a compassionate example by showing respect for animal rights while maintaining the cultural significance of Muharram processions.

PETA India has been proactive in promoting such alternatives, donating 26 mechanical elephants across various institutions and replacing live elephants with mechanical models. The organization believes that a mechanical elephant could effectively mimic an elephant's movements without exposing any animals to potential harm or distress.
