Vijayawada's 108 Ambulance Service Sees Boom: 7.78 Lakh Cases Handled in Year

Highlights

  • Vijayawada's 108 ambulance network handled 7,78,799 cases between June 2025 to May 2026
  • Focus on road accident victims and pregnant women with over 113,000 road accident cases and more than 1,000 women safely transported for critical care
  • Advanced technology includes GPS tracking, real-time traffic navigation, and digitised patient records
  • Cardiac emergencies saw attention through advanced life support systems and continuous communication with hospitals

The Vijayawada government has significantly beefed up the 108 emergency ambulance service, enhancing its capabilities to cover both urban and rural areas while ensuring faster response times during critical emergencies. According to official statistics, this upgraded network, managed in collaboration with Bhavya Health Care, attended to an impressive 7,78,799 cases from June 2025 to May 2026.

A key focus has been on the timely delivery of critical care during golden hour interventions, particularly for road accident victims and pregnant women. Among those addressed, 1,13,764 were involved in road accidents, with 1,05,786 expecting mothers safely transported to healthcare facilities for critical pregnancy management. The service has played a pivotal role in reducing maternal and infant mortality rates by ensuring rapid access to necessary treatments.

Enhanced Emergency Response

The improved emergency framework now sports advanced technology such as GPS-based tracking systems, real-time traffic navigation, and digitised patient records. This facilitates prompt ambulance arrivals at accident scenes and enhances coordination with hospitals for effective treatment.

Beyond road accidents and maternal care, other major emergencies included respiratory distress cases (97,118), injury-related emergencies (49,342), cardiac cases (45,951), and unconscious patients (40,553). The service also managed 34,532 abdominal pain incidents, 32,858 poisoning cases, seizure episodes (29,485), stroke events (20,278), and 14,007 neonatal emergencies.

Of the total cases served, 2,53,022 were transferred through Inter-Facility Transfers (IFT) to ensure seamless continuity of care from primary health centers to tertiary hospitals. Another 5,25,777 non-IFT emergencies required immediate on-site responses and evacuations.

The service has further strengthened its cardiac care capabilities with advanced life support systems and a sophisticated communication network enabling real-time patient data transmission directly to hospitals during transit.
