Mamata Banerjee Files Legal Challenge Against Bhowanipore Election Results Victory
Mamata Banerjee has formally challenged her electoral defeat to Suvendu Adhikari in Bhowanipore at the Calcutta High Court. The petition cites irregularities and alleged assaults during the vote counting process, mirroring a similar ongoing legal battle from the 2021 Nandigram election.

Highlights
- •Mamata Banerjee filed an election petition at the Calcutta High Court challenging her defeat to Suvendu Adhikari.
- •The challenge concerns the Bhowanipore constituency polls where Adhikari won by a margin of 15,105 votes.
- •Legal representatives allege that the candidate and her agent were assaulted during the vote counting process.
- •A similar petition remains pending at the High Court regarding the 2021 Nandigram election result.
In a significant legal move, Mamata Banerjee, the leader of the Trinamul Congress, visited the Calcutta High Court this Tuesday. The visit comes as the party files an election petition challenging the results of the recent polls in her home constituency of Bhowanipore, where she was defeated by the Bharatiya Janata Party’s Suvendu Adhikari, the current Chief Minister of West Bengal.
This appearance marks the second time the former Chief Minister has visited the High Court since her party lost power in the state. Previously, on May 14, she appeared in the capacity of a lawyer to argue against instances of post-poll violence and the eviction of hawkers following the BJP's formation of its inaugural government in West Bengal. During that earlier visit, she encountered protests from a group of lawyers on the court premises.
Legal Challenge Against Election Results
Accompanying Mamata Banerjee during her arrival at approximately 2 pm were party MLA Kunal Ghosh, along with Rajya Sabha members Derek O'Brien and Dola Sen. The group arrived to formally submit the plea contesting the victory of Suvendu Adhikari, who secured the seat by a margin of 15,105 votes.
Speaking on behalf of the Trinamul Congress leader, her lawyer and party MP Kalyan Banerjee stated, “She came to the Calcutta High Court to affirm the election petition, which she filed to challenge the election of Mr. Adhikari, citing that the electoral process was conducted improperly.” The legal team has specifically pointed to incidents occurring after the 12th round of vote counting, alleging that both the candidate and her designated election agent were assaulted and forcibly removed from the counting center.
This current legal action is notably similar to a previous petition filed by Mamata Banerjee after her defeat to Suvendu Adhikari in his home turf of Nandigram during the 2021 elections. That specific matter remains ongoing, having undergone a series of hearings at the Calcutta High Court without reaching a final resolution. The submission of this new election petition indicates the ongoing tension between the state's political rivals as they continue to contest electoral outcomes through the judicial system. The legal proceedings are expected to be closely watched as they develop in the coming weeks.
