The Origins of the Chandiwal Commission Investigation

The controversy dates back to 2021, when former Mumbai Police Commissioner Param Bir Singh alleged that Anil Deshmukh had instructed police personnel to collect monthly dues of Rs 100 crore from various commercial establishments across the city. Following these explosive claims, the administration, then led by Uddhav Thackeray, established the Chandiwal Commission to conduct an in-depth inquiry into the matter.

Retired High Court judge Justice K.U. Chandiwal led the investigation, which spanned 13 months of rigorous examination. The final 1,400-page report was formally submitted to the state government on April 26, 2022. Despite the passage of four years since its submission, the findings have yet to be revealed to the public, creating a significant legal and political impasse.

Deshmukh Demands Transparency and Accountability

Anil Deshmukh has characterized the continued suppression of the Chandiwal Commission report as a severe violation of natural justice. He argues that the administration's refusal to release the document infringes upon his personal and legal rights. Throughout his campaign for transparency, the former minister has reached out to officials repeatedly, including submitting 11 separate letters to the Chief Minister, yet he reports that his efforts have been met with silence.

In a formal memorandum submitted to the Governor, Deshmukh has outlined four primary demands to address the situation. He is requesting the immediate publication of the commission's findings, direct access to the recorded evidence, and an independent investigation into why the document has remained under wraps for so long. Furthermore, he has asked the Governor to invoke constitutional authority to ensure government accountability.

This development adds a new layer to the ongoing political discourse surrounding the events that prompted Deshmukh to resign from his position as Home Minister in April 2021.
