Russian President Vladimir Putin has signalled a promising future for the nuclear energy sector in India, with significant focus on Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant (KKNPP). Speaking at the St Petersburg International Economic Forum, Putin expressed confidence that trade between Russia and India could reach USD 100 billion annually. This includes ambitious plans for expanding economic ties through key sectors such as nuclear energy, hydrocarbons, and investments.
Progress with Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant
The KKNPP, located in Tirunelveli district of Tamil Nadu, is a landmark project reflecting Russia's continued commitment to India's civilian nuclear programme. In May 2023, the Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB) granted permission for major equipment erection at Units 5 and 6 of the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Project. This development marks another substantial milestone in India's quest to enhance its nuclear energy capacity.
According to statements from the Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL), this permission is a significant step towards achieving full power output at KKNPP, which will further contribute to India's energy requirements. The progress on Units 5 and 6 stands as a testament to the ongoing collaboration between Russia and India in the field of nuclear energy.
Earlier discussions and plans for future cooperation also indicate that this partnership extends beyond just the Kudankulam project, with new platforms emerging in the hydrocarbons sector. Putin highlighted these opportunities, emphasizing the mutual benefits of expanding economic relationships through increased investment in both countries.
