Kannur: The political landscape in Kerala recently shifted with a notable resignation. Sunny Joseph, the Kerala Electricity Minister, announced that his brother-in-law Benny Thomas resigned from his role as Additional Personal Secretary to avoid controversy over allegations of nepotism.
The resignation followed criticism from opposition parties and surfaced when Thomas's appointment to Joe's personal staff was questioned. Prior to the UDF coming into power, Thomas had been appointed following support within Kannur district. According to Joseph, the main reason for accepting this support was his need for a trusted associate given the key portfolios he oversees.
Political Scrutiny and Resignation
A meeting of the Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) did not raise significant concerns initially; however, following further scrutiny, Thomas decided to step down. The minister himself noted that his colleague had suggested retention despite public criticism from opposition parties.
Despite internal support, Thomas found it prudent to leave a position that was at the center of political debate. "From my standpoint, I needed someone who is reliable and well-known to assist me with my responsibilities. Unfortunately, the issue became highly contentious, and he felt compelled to resign to uphold integrity," stated Sunny Joseph.
Joseph emphasized his commitment to ensuring good governance and transparency, stating that no further action was necessary regarding Thomas's resignation.
