The Indian Institute of Technology Hyderabad (IIT-H) has demonstrated remarkable growth in the international academic landscape, securing a significant leap in the latest global university rankings. According to the QS World University Rankings 2027, the institute moved up 76 places, advancing from its previous position of 664 to 588 globally.
A key driver of this impressive climb is the institution's exceptional research output. IIT-H achieved a global ranking of 123 in the Citations per Faculty metric, underscoring its status as a major hub for research-intensive innovation. The institute’s score in this vital category increased to 86.8, highlighting the influence and relevance of its scholarly work on the global stage.
Rising Influence of IIT Hyderabad
The latest data indicates that IIT Hyderabad now outperforms approximately 61 percent of the 1,500 institutions assessed across 100 countries, a noticeable improvement from the 55.9 percent mark recorded in the prior year. Within the national context, out of the 52 Indian universities evaluated, the institute stands at 17th position overall and holds 14th place nationally regarding research citations.
Prof. B.S. Murty, the director of IIT Hyderabad, noted that this upward trajectory is a direct result of the institute's commitment to deep-tech innovation and translational research. He emphasized that the significant global rise and the high ranking in citations per faculty demonstrate how the institution’s research activities are actively contributing to and shaping scientific discourse on a worldwide scale.
Status of the University of Hyderabad
In the same report, the University of Hyderabad (UoH) maintained its established standing in the QS World University Rankings 2027, retaining its position within the 851–900 global band. The university showcased strength across several specific performance indicators.
UoH recorded a sustainability score of 53.4, a citations per faculty score of 48.1, and an international research network score of 28.9. Furthermore, the university reported an impressive 98.1 score regarding staff members holding PhDs, illustrating the high quality and academic depth of its workforce. Prof. J. Anuradha, the Vice Chancellor of UoH, attributed these results to the collective dedication of the university's researchers, faculty, and students.
She emphasized that the institution views such rankings as a natural outcome of consistent academic excellence rather than a primary goal. Moving forward, the university remains dedicated to fostering deep research capabilities, enhancing educational opportunities for students, and continuing the development of strategic global partnerships to expand its academic footprint.
