The Telangana Council of Higher Education (TGCHE) has formally proposed a significant expansion of academic infrastructure in the region, extending an invitation to the University of Waikato to establish a new presence in India. This strategic move aims to integrate international expertise within the upcoming Bharat Future City development.
During a high-level meeting held in Hyderabad on Monday, Prof. V. Balakista Reddy, the chairman of TGCHE, outlined the state’s vision for enhancing academic collaboration. The discussion centered on the potential for the University of Waikato to set up an off-campus center, aligning with the state government’s goal of creating a dedicated university zone within the Bharat Future City project. This initiative is designed to be a comprehensive ecosystem where students and faculty can seamlessly "work, live, learn, and play."

The visiting delegation from the University of Waikato, headed by Sharon Calvert, who serves as the assistant vice-chancellor for International Engagement and Partnership, engaged in productive dialogues regarding potential institutional partnerships across Telangana. Currently, the university hosts a student body that includes over 1,000 students from India, underscoring an already existing bond between the two regions.
