For several years, the Central Government in India has been implementing various schemes to support farmers and economically weaker sections, ensuring millions benefit from facilities such as free rations, medical treatment, and gas connections. Recently, the government approved a significant ₹25,530 crore allocation for the Scheme for Assistance in Ration Transport and Handling-Income with Automation in Public Distribution System (SARTHAK PDS) to continue its efforts.
According to Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, this extension will further strengthen India's Public Distribution System, improving the ration delivery mechanism. The initiative aims to assist state-level agencies with transporting food grains from warehouses to ration shops within their respective states, expected to improve supply chain efficiency and reduce costs.
Ration Dealers Can Look Forward to Increased Incomes and Modern Infrastructure
The new scheme also includes a hike in commission rates for ration shopkeepers. This move is anticipated to boost the income of small-scale shopkeepers, who have long been demanding better financial incentives.
AI Integration in Public Distribution System and **Modernization Efforts** comprise another pivotal aspect of this initiative. Leveraging Artificial Intelligence will aid in identifying genuine beneficiaries and reducing fraudulent cases. The government plans to modernize the ration distribution mechanism, implementing automation, digital tracking, and online monitoring to minimize instances of theft and black marketeering.
In addition, support for fair price shops includes providing digital equipment, improved storage facilities, and operational assistance. This is expected to streamline operations and reduce irregularities in the distribution process, ensuring that essential food items reach households more effectively.
