The Eighth Pay Commission (EPC) is on the horizon, with significant implications for Central Government employees. Anticipation is building as the commission is expected to present recommendations to the government by May next year. Central employees are eagerly awaiting these changes, which could result in substantial salary hikes and benefit enhancements.

Consultant Recruitment: A Key Component of EPC Procedures

The Pay Commission is currently underpinning its recommendations by soliciting applications for consultant positions. According to an Office Memorandum issued on April 10, 2026, these consultants will be hired on a contractual basis.

Ranjana Prakash Desai, former Supreme Court judge, heads the Pay Commission with Professor Pulak Ghosh (Permanent Professor of Finance and Member of the Prime Minister's Economic Advisory Council) as a member. Additionally, Pankaj Jain serves as its member-secretary.

The recruitment is divided into three levels: Senior Consultant requires 10 years of experience and is capped at 45 years old; Consultants need six years with an age limit of 40; while Young Professionals must have a minimum of four years' experience under the age of 32. Candidates are required to hold either a Master's or MBA degree in Finance, HR, Industrial Relations, along with an LLB and legal experience if applicable.

The compensation structure varies based on position: Senior Consultants will earn Rs 1.80 lakh per month; Consultants, Rs 1.20 lakh; and Young Professionals, Rs 90,000.

These consultants play a crucial role in evaluating the salary structures, allowances, pension frameworks, and financial implications for various categories of government employees. Their tasks include data analysis, ministry liaison, report preparation, and more.

The EPC Process

The Pay Commission aims to analyze and recommend salary structures, allowances, and pension frameworks across different job roles in the Central Government. This process involves collecting views and suggestions from various ministries, employee unions, pensioners, and other relevant stakeholders.

Consultants will evaluate data, prepare reports, and offer recommendations based on these consultations. Currently, formal memorandums are being submitted, with scheduled consultation sessions, including a meeting in Dehradun on April 24, 2026.
