The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is grappling with significant challenges as it endeavors to secure its third consecutive victory in the upcoming assembly elections in Uttarakhand. Sources indicate that internal rifts within the party along with mounting anti-incumbency sentiments are major concerns for the ruling BJP.Pushkar Singh Dhami, the Chief Minister of Uttarakhand, and BJP president Nitin Nabin have been addressing these issues through strategic moves.
Factionalism and Governance Concerns
The BJP's top leadership is currently receiving several complaints about growing factionalism within its party unit in Uttarakhand. This issue has garnered attention as it could jeopardize the ruling party's ambitious "Mission Hat-trick." The main opposition, Congress, remains busy reviving itself to contest against these internal divisions.
Nabin undertook a three-day visit to the state during which he held extensive meetings with senior local BJP leaders and Pushkar Singh Dhami. Discussions largely centered on organizational issues and preparations for the impending election. The BJP president also stressed that it should not give the opposition any opportunity to reorganize into a formidable threat.
To counter anti-incumbency, the BJP is poised to field new candidates in many constituencies. Additionally, veteran leaders may be reassigned to areas where they face lesser challenges from the opposition. Despite these efforts, several sitting BJP MLAs are still grappling with rising voter dissatisfaction, despite repeated exhortations by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other BJP elders to stay connected with their constituents.
Furthermore, the law and order situation in Uttarakhand continues to deteriorate, raising additional concerns for the BJP.
