As Manipur Conflict Intensifies, Urgent Central Intervention Is Required to Restore Peace
Manipur continues to suffer from protracted ethnic violence, leading to significant civil unrest and security challenges. Experts stress that immediate central government intervention, intelligence-led operations, and a mediated dialogue between the Kuki-Zo and Meitei communities are critical to de-escalating the crisis and restoring long-term stability.

The state of Manipur continues to face significant unrest as communal violence persists, making the restoration of lasting peace a difficult challenge. Residents in the region frequently live under the shadow of potential conflict, with daily routines often disrupted by protests, curfews, and the suspension of mobile data services. This ongoing Manipur violence has created an environment of constant uncertainty and fear across the valley and hill districts.
A recent escalation occurred following the tragic deaths of two children in a bomb attack near Tronglaobi. The incident sparked intense public agitation, eventually leading to the case being transferred to the National Investigation Agency (NIA) for a thorough probe. Tensions further flared when protesters vandalized a CRPF post in Gelmol, resulting in a confrontation that claimed three lives as security forces attempted to protect their armories from being looted.
Addressing Security Challenges and Militancy
The issue of stolen weaponry remains a critical security concern. Following massive incidents in May 2023, where over 6,000 weapons were taken from police armories, efforts to recover these firearms have been ongoing, though many remain in the hands of miscreants. Authorities have recently made notable recoveries, including sophisticated weapons such as AK series rifles, RPG launchers, and mortars from various locations like Kakching and Imphal.
Experts note that the redeployment of central paramilitary companies during election periods has complicated security maintenance in the region. Currently, a substantial force of CAPF personnel, alongside the Army, continues to manage buffer zones between the Kuki-Zo inhabitants and the Meiteis to prevent direct confrontations. Despite these measures, ethnic clashes have continued to occur, with recent incidents in Ukhrul and Kamjong highlighting the fragile nature of the current security situation.
To bolster stability, there are plans to deploy three elite COBRA battalions of the CRPF to the region. These specialized units are expected to undergo intensive pre-induction training focused on the local terrain and cultural customs to effectively address the challenges. However, the path to normalcy requires more than just military presence. Stakeholders emphasize that the central government must prioritize a negotiated settlement by bringing representatives from all involved communities to a single platform. Additionally, accelerating the work of the commission of inquiry and ensuring the swift completion of CBI and NIA investigations are seen as essential steps to restore public confidence and deter further violence in Manipur.
