Andhra Pradesh Government Announces Readiness for Upcoming Local Body Polls

The Andhra Pradesh state administration has officially communicated to the High Court that it is fully prepared to initiate the electoral process for local governing bodies. This significant update comes as a response to judicial scrutiny regarding the timeline and preparedness of the state government to conduct these essential grassroots-level polls.

Judicial Review and Government Submission

The proceedings were conducted before a division bench, featuring Chief Justice Lisa Gill and Justice R. Raghunandan Rao. Representing the state, Advocate General Dammalapati Srinivas presented the government's formal submission. He emphasized that the comprehensive data collection phase, known as the Comprehensive Family Survey, has been successfully concluded. The administration now plans to present this gathered information before the gram sabhas, allowing for a verification process and ensuring transparency before moving forward.

According to the Advocate General, this verification exercise is slated to span over two days, providing a window for the public and stakeholders to file any objections until June 24. This systematic approach is intended to resolve potential disputes before the formal announcement of the local body polls. The government's readiness to address these administrative requirements signals a proactive stance on finalizing the electoral roadmap.

Reservation Framework and Future Proceedings

A critical component of the upcoming local body polls involves the finalization of reservation categories, particularly concerning Backward Classes (BC). The state has previously appointed a one-man commission tasked with the responsibility of meticulously reviewing and recommending appropriate reservation structures. The court was informed that this commission is expected to submit its official report in the near future.

The state government maintains that its strategy for conducting the elections is intrinsically linked to the findings and recommendations of this commission. By basing the electoral process on these findings, the government aims to ensure equitable representation across the various local governing bodies in Andhra Pradesh. Following the presentation of these submissions, the High Court directed the state government to formally file its counter-affidavit. The bench has scheduled the next hearing for this matter to take place on July 16, where further judicial review and directives regarding the local body polls will likely be provided.
