In a unique initiative to promote health and wellness, the Visakhapatnam Port Authority (VPA) recently hosted a special International Day of Yoga session aboard a foreign merchant vessel. The event, which took place on Saturday, saw the active participation of the crew from the foreign ship, MV Alonissos, currently docked at the EQ-6 berth in the port city.
This event is a significant highlight of the ongoing 11th International Day of Yoga celebrations. The VPA has organized a week-long series of programs running from June 15 to June 21, strictly following the directives issued by the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways. These nationwide efforts are focused on the theme "Yoga for Healthy Ageing," emphasizing the role of traditional practices in maintaining long-term physical and mental well-being.
Promoting Wellness Through Community Engagement
The week-long series of activities is being professionally coordinated by the CISF Unit of the VPA. Since the start of the week, the port authority has successfully reached out to a wide variety of stakeholders to foster a culture of health. Participants in these sessions have included female officers and staff, various employees, local school and college students, as well as trade partners and male personnel.
According to VPA officials, these initiatives have garnered an exceptionally positive and encouraging response across the entire port community. By extending these sessions to international sailors on board MV Alonissos, the authority has managed to elevate the scope of the International Day of Yoga to a global platform within its harbor limits.
As the week draws to a close, the VPA is preparing for a grand finale. The celebrations will officially conclude this Sunday with a mass yoga demonstration scheduled at the Rajiv Gandhi Indoor Stadium, located within the Port Sports Complex. A substantial turnout, featuring participants from all departments of the port authority, is expected at the event to mark the culmination of these successful efforts.
These organized efforts reflect a growing trend in public sector institutions to prioritize employee and community wellness. By integrating such events into professional environments, the VPA aims to ensure that the benefits of regular practice reach all members of the maritime ecosystem, strengthening ties between administrative staff, local citizens, and international maritime visitors alike.
