Highlights

  • Development of the Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the Tada–Nellore six-laning project is now underway.
  • Sheladia Associates has been appointed to prepare the project report for the National Highway-16 expansion.
  • The project aims to alleviate traffic congestion on the Chennai–Kolkata corridor and improve industrial logistics.
  • District officials are prioritizing safety features, including truck lay-bys and improved flyover clearance.

Commuters and regional industry stakeholders have received positive news as efforts move forward to address the Tada–Nellore six-laning project. The initiative, which focuses on expanding the stretch of National Highway-16 and the Nellore Bypass from four lanes to six, has officially entered the crucial Detailed Project Report (DPR) phase.

During a recent stakeholder meeting held at Tikkana Pranganam Hall in the Collectorate, district collector Himanshu Shukla confirmed that the consultancy responsibilities for the DPR have been awarded to Sheladia Associates. This development represents a significant step forward in enhancing the infrastructure of this key transit corridor.

Improving Highway Infrastructure and Connectivity

The meeting was attended by various officials, including National Highways Authority project director Ramesh Ganapati and senior highway design engineer Y. Murali, alongside local public representatives. The primary objective of the Tada–Nellore six-laning expansion is to bolster the carrying capacity of the critical Chennai–Kolkata corridor. By increasing the width of the highway, authorities aim to significantly reduce traffic congestion while ensuring safer and more efficient travel for the public.

Collector Himanshu Shukla emphasized the importance of stakeholder feedback during the planning stage. He directed officials to carefully assess the necessity of truck lay-bys in strategic locations and to resolve concerns regarding clearance heights under existing flyovers. The comprehensive DPR will encompass a detailed evaluation of current traffic volumes, necessary land acquisition procedures, potential environmental impacts, as well as specific designs for bridges and the highway structure itself. Accurate estimation of project costs is also a central component of this study.

This infrastructure upgrade is expected to have a lasting impact on the region once completed. Beyond facilitating smoother passenger movement, the project is designed to support industrial growth, streamline logistics, and boost trade across Andhra Pradesh. The Nellore–Tada section currently functions as a significant bottleneck on NH-16, especially considering that the majority of the highway stretch moving beyond Tada toward Visakhapatnam has already been upgraded to a six-lane configuration.

By finalizing the Tada–Nellore six-laning DPR, local authorities are positioning the state to handle future traffic demands effectively. The project reflects a broader commitment to strengthening transportation networks, which serves as a vital foundation for continued economic prosperity in the district and the surrounding areas.
