A horrific rape-cum-murder of a three-year-old girl in the Tiruvallur district of Tamil Nadu has ignited a fierce political outcry across the state. The tragic incident occurred on Sunday evening near Gummidipoondi, leading prominent political figures to condemn the state administration for alleged lapses in maintaining public safety and order.
The young victim, whose parents were immigrant workers from Bihar, was playing outside her residence in Pudupettai when she was reportedly targeted. The primary accused has been identified as Bipin Manjhi, a 19-year-old immigrant worker residing in the same area. Following the assault, the girl was discovered in a nearby bush by locals. Despite immediate efforts to seek medical attention at a government facility in Kottakarai and her subsequent transfer to Stanley Medical College Hospital in Chennai, the child tragically succumbed to her injuries on Monday morning.
Political Leaders Demand Action and Accountability
The brutal rape-cum-murder has triggered strong reactions from various political quarters. Leader of the Opposition in the Assembly, Udhayanidhi Stalin, issued a sharp statement on Monday, asserting that criminal activities once seen in distant regions are now occurring within Tamil Nadu. He expressed deep concern over the current state of law and order, suggesting the situation has deteriorated significantly. Stalin also directed pointed criticism toward Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay, urging the administration to prioritize state security over political maneuvering.
Former Chief Minister and AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami questioned the effectiveness of the current administration, highlighting the toll on innocent lives during what he described as a trial period for the TVK government. He urged the leadership to treat matters of safety with greater urgency.
Furthermore, PMK leader Anbumani Ramadoss suggested that widespread drug abuse is a contributing factor to such heinous crimes and insisted that additional suspects may be involved beyond the individual already in custody. Representing the BJP, state president Nainar Nagenthiran questioned the government regarding the protection of children in the state. Other political figures have also called for stricter scrutiny of labor demographics in industrial areas to ensure public security. While the SIPCOT police have confirmed the registration of a case and the arrest of the suspect, the incident has clearly intensified the pressure on the Tamil Nadu government to demonstrate a more robust commitment to public safety.
