Murshidabad Municipality Chairman Arrested Following Intense Public Gherao and Corruption Allegations

In a significant development in Murshidabad, the chairman of the Jiagunj-Azimgunj Municipality, Prasanjit Ghosh, was taken into police custody late on Wednesday night. The arrest followed a tense, day-long gherao by local residents who expressed deep dissatisfaction with the municipal leadership. The situation escalated throughout the day, culminating in law enforcement officers finally detaining Ghosh around 2:30 am.

As the chairman was being moved from the site of the protest, a large and frustrated crowd voiced their anger, directing shouts of “thief, thief” at him while pelting him with eggs. To maintain order and ensure the safety of the accused amidst the high-tension atmosphere, local police utilized the Bhagirathi River as a transport route. He was subsequently brought to the Jiagunj Police Station, where he remains held as investigations continue.

Corruption Allegations Spark Public Unrest

The circumstances surrounding the arrest of Prasanjit Ghosh are rooted in serious allegations of widespread corruption. According to official police reports, the charges are linked to irregularities found in various government-funded welfare schemes, including the well-known Bangla Awas Yojana. Authorities have expanded their operation, confirming that three other individuals, identified as close associates of the chairman, have also been apprehended in connection with the ongoing inquiry.

The municipality serves as a key administrative body within the Murshidabad Assembly constituency, which is currently represented by the state's Library Minister Gouri Shankar Ghosh. In a public statement following the arrest, the minister described the day-long standoff as a manifestation of “spontaneous public anger.” He highlighted that local citizens had maintained their peaceful but firm gherao of the chairman until the early hours of Thursday, indicating a growing intolerance for alleged malfeasance in local government.

Thousands of people gathered outside the Jiagunj Police Station following the arrest, necessitating a heightened security presence to prevent further escalation of unrest. While the primary figure of the municipality is currently behind bars, law enforcement agencies have indicated that the investigation is active and ongoing. Officials are continuing to scrutinize municipal financial records to determine the full scope of the alleged corruption schemes and whether further individuals will be implicated in the coming days.
