The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has reiterated that India's energy security initiatives remain firmly rooted in the nation's best interests. During a recent briefing in New Delhi, MEA Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal emphasized that the government is dedicated to providing affordable power to the country’s 1.4 billion citizens by diversifying its procurement sources. This policy guidance comes as global markets navigate volatile geopolitical shifts, particularly within West Asia, and amid inquiries concerning oil imports and international waivers.

Jaiswal confirmed that the core strategy for India's energy security relies on maintaining access to affordable and varied energy supplies. Regarding maritime stability in the Strait of Hormuz, he provided a positive update, noting that trade routes remain functional. Following the signing of a significant Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on June 17, multiple vessels have successfully navigated this vital waterway. This includes three Indian-flagged crude oil tankers, among a total of 11 India-bound ships that have resumed transit. Efforts are ongoing to ensure the smooth passage of remaining vessels currently in the region.

Strengthening Diplomatic and Humanitarian Ties

In addition to energy discussions, the capital is currently the site of the BRICS National Security Advisor (NSA) summit. During the event, the Indian NSA held bilateral talks with his Iranian counterpart to evaluate the deteriorating security environment in West Asia. The two leaders reviewed ongoing cooperative efforts, including the strategic development of Chabahar Port, and discussed broader regional bilateral relations.

Addressing humanitarian concerns, the MEA also affirmed India’s steadfast support for Palestine. Responding to appeals regarding the critical state of Gaza's medical infrastructure, Jaiswal highlighted India's long-standing developmental partnership with the region. This commitment is supported through ongoing bilateral projects and substantial contributions to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA).

As part of its continued humanitarian pledge, India is preparing to transfer USD 2.5 million to the UNRWA. This payment represents the initial installment of an annual USD 5 million commitment, reinforcing India's dual focus on protecting its own economic sovereignty while fulfilling its role as a responsible global partner in humanitarian development.
