Hyderabad Seeks ₹21 Cr for Tarnaka School Building

Highlights

  • Government Girls Primary School at Tarnaka faces long-standing facility issues
  • School has been operating from dilapidated premises since 1960
  • Students temporarily shifted to Aaryavatika school for ongoing education
  • High Court involved in safeguarding student interests and allocating land

Telangana's School Education Department recently informed the state's High Court of its plans to spend ₹21 crore on building a new permanent structure for the Government Girls Primary School at Tarnaka. This plan is in response to decades-old issues with the school's dilapidated premises and safety concerns faced by students and teachers.

According to the district educational officer's counter affidavit, the school has been operational since 1960 on land belonging to the Telangana State Dairy Development Cooperative Federation (Vijaya dairy). It serves neighborhoods like Hanumannagar, Gokulnagar, Errakunta slum, and Tarnaka. The affidavit noted that the current building is unsafe, with classroom roofs deteriorating over several decades.

In a recent inspection on March 5, 2026, by the deputy inspector of schools, Maredpally, it was found that the entire building is in dire need of repair. Continued operations at this location are becoming increasingly difficult due to surrounding dairy quarters being vacated. The construction will aim to provide a safer and more conducive learning environment for students.

The Move to Temporary Accommodation

In the meantime, from June 12, 2026, permission has been granted to temporarily relocate students to the Government Primary School at Aaryavatika, Lalapet. This temporary shift is necessary until construction of the new building is complete.

The parents and guardians of students who have filed a writ petition expressed their concerns over inadequate space and facility. They sought instructions from the High Court to either allot land around Vijaya dairy for school construction or safeguard student interests during this transition period. The High Court had previously directed departments to respond, resulting in the current counter affidavit.

These developments come at a time when urban development projects are increasingly prioritizing educational infrastructure to meet growing demands and improve quality education standards across Hyderabad city.
