Kolkata, West Bengal: Prashanta Burman, a suspended civil servant from the West Bengal Civil Service and previously the Rajganj block development officer (BDO) in Jalpaiguri, faced arrest for an inebriated driving incident that led to injuries. The 37-year-old, who was at large after the Supreme Court ordered his surrender by January of this year over a 2019 murder case, left the scene injured a pedestrian earlier this month, according to local residents.
Burman was operating his black Mahindra Thar SUV near an Action Area I mall when he reportedly swerved and struck another motorcyclist. Out of the vehicle in a state of intoxication, Burman encountered aggrieved locals who had blocked him. His video circulated on social media late Monday night, prompting the immediate police response.
Officers from the Eco Park Police Station arrived at the scene to take custody of Burman. Despite a brief altercation during questioning, the BDO was taken into custody and booked for rash driving charges. Following his appearance, he secured bail from the Barasat Court in North 24 Parganas early Tuesday morning.
Alleged Misbehavior with Police
Burman reportedly misbehaved during interrogation by challenging the officers and refusing to cooperate. Nevertheless, his immediate release on bail demonstrates a lesser sentence for now in his multiple legal troubles.
The civil servant was earlier arrested in connection with the murder of Swapan Kamilya, a gold merchant from Salt Lake City, in October 2021. His involvement in murder cases complicates efforts to hold him accountable further for this incident and others.
