Congress Alleges BJP Manipulation of Voter Lists in Telangana State

The Congress party in Telangana has raised serious alarms regarding the current Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, suggesting that the BJP-led central government is weaponizing the process for political gain. Meenakshi Natarajan, the Congress affairs in-charge for the state, officially cautioned party members to remain vigilant against what she described as a systematic effort to manipulate democratic outcomes through vote, seat, and party theft.

Speaking at an awareness seminar for Booth Level Agents (BLAs) held in Hanamkonda, Natarajan criticized the ruling coalition for undermining national democratic institutions. She highlighted that while updating voter lists is a standard administrative procedure, its alleged misuse by the BJP poses a significant threat to the integrity of future elections. She specifically alleged that the central government aims to retain voters who support their platform while proactively removing others.

Safeguarding Democratic Rights and Voter Lists

The Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) president, Bomma Mahesh Kumar Goud, echoed these concerns, alleging that the Election Commission is currently functioning under the undue influence of the central government, specifically pointing to the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah. He claimed there is a focused effort to delete names of voters from minority, Scheduled Caste, Scheduled Tribe, and tribal communities from the rolls.

To combat this, Natarajan emphasized that Congress workers must not become complacent. She urged party volunteers to take proactive steps rather than waiting for formal election announcements. Every BLA and party representative is encouraged to conduct door-to-door verification to ensure that every eligible citizen retains their constitutional right to vote. She warned that negligence during the current SIR process could lead to irreversible consequences for the democratic representation of the region.

The event, which was also attended by Warangal West MLA Naini Rajender Reddy and District Congress Committee president Engala Venkatram Reddy, served as a platform to train workers on monitoring the ongoing BLA-2 SIR exercise. The party leadership reiterated that they are committed to protecting the integrity of the electoral process at the grassroots level. By focusing on economically vulnerable sections of society, the party aims to neutralize the risks posed by the current revision process. Goud concluded the session by calling for total mobilization of the cadre to protect the electoral rights of all citizens, ensuring that the Congress remains a barrier against what they term as undemocratic electoral practices.
