Two Shiv Sena (UBT) MPs, Nagesh Ashtikar and Omprakash Nimbalkar, have defected to the Eknath Shinde-led faction, citing dissatisfaction with the opposition's effectiveness. The move highlights intense political realignments as both factions claim legitimacy over the Shiv Sena identity.

In a significant political development, two Members of Parliament from the Shiv Sena (UBT) faction, Nagesh Patil Ashtikar and Omprakash Raje Nimbalkar, have announced their decision to join the Eknath Shinde-led faction. This shift underscores ongoing internal realignments within the state's political landscape, as representatives seek to navigate the complexities of being in the Opposition.
Reasons Behind the Defection to the Shinde Faction
Explaining their move, Nagesh Patil Ashtikar, who represents the Hingoli constituency, clarified in a video statement that he and several other MPs had remained with the Shiv Sena (UBT) until June 18. He pointed to specific disparaging remarks made against them—a reference widely perceived to be aimed at Sanjay Raut—as a primary catalyst for their decision. Ashtikar emphasized that his move was not a departure from his underlying ideology, but rather a transition from one faction of the Shiv Sena to the other, necessitated by a lack of perceived progress and the limitations of being outside the government.
Similarly, Omprakash Raje Nimbalkar expressed frustrations regarding his inability to effectively address pressing issues within his constituency while operating from the Opposition benches. He noted that the Shinde-Fadnavis leadership had facilitated discussions with Union Home Minister Amit Shah to seek resolution on certain matters. Nimbalkar stated that their goal was to seek justice based on legal merits rather than political favors, particularly concerning pending legal appeals.
Political Repercussions and Leadership Response
The defection follows a notable absence of several key MPs, including Sanjay Dina Patil, Sanjay Deshmukh, Sanjay Jadhav, and Bhausaheb Wakchaure, from a Shiv Sena (UBT) parliamentary meeting held in Delhi on June 17. In response, Sanjay Raut maintained that the party remains in communication with various dissident leaders, suggesting that reconciliation efforts are still ongoing with at least two individuals who may have acted hastily.
Meanwhile, the debate over the party's legitimacy continues to dominate headlines. Uddhav Thackeray strongly reaffirmed his stance, declaring that the organization led by him remains the “only Shiv Sena.” This assertion served as a direct counter to comments made by Union Home Minister Amit Shah during a recent visit to Kolhapur. Shah had declared that with the consolidation of support for the Eknath Shinde-led group, the distinction between factions had effectively disappeared, leaving only one recognized Shiv Sena. As the Shiv Sena (UBT) currently holds nine Lok Sabha seats, the potential for further shifts remains a point of intense speculation, with anti-defection regulations requiring at least six MPs to defect collectively to avoid disqualification.
