Authorities in the Chittoor district recently uncovered a secretive network engaged in illegal prenatal sex determination tests. A raid conducted by the Bangarupalem police and health department officials near Chandrasekharapuram village revealed that four individuals were arrested for conducting these unauthorised procedures. While one suspect escaped, 14 women who underwent such tests are recorded, adding urgency to the case.
Sex Determination Tests:
The operation began after a complaint from Dr KS Lohith Changalrayan, indicating that pregnant women were being brought in for tests. The accused, based out of an under-construction house near Tummakuppam PHC, allegedly charged ₹10,000 per scan without proper authorisation.
Criminals' Methodology:
In addition to the arrests, police identified B Padmavati, V Jyothi, S Jyothish, and N Roman Kumar as involved in conducting scans. The suspects' accomplices, B Sudhakar Reddy and Nagaraju, were found absconding.
"We have arrested those who had been operating under the radar, putting women's health at risk," said a senior police official. The search for Nagaraju continues as he remains at large.
The bust comes with the identification of 14 pregnant women from Tamil Nadu and Karnataka who sought illegal sex determination tests, underscoring the scale of the operation. Their statements have been recorded by investigators.
