Palakkad: In a shocking development, authorities arrested 42-year-old Prabhavathi, a BJP candidate for the local body elections, for allegedly stealing Rs. 10,000 from a Mariamman Temple donation box in Kanimangalam on Friday night. The incident was discovered the next day when temple officials found the box damaged during their routine rituals.
The theft came to light just as the usual rituals began at the temple on Saturday morning. Prabhavathi, who contested in the 2020 local body elections for the 17th ward of Palakkad Nenmara Panchayath, faces further legal scrutiny. Investigating police found incriminating evidence from CCTV footage showing a woman tampering with the donation box.
Previous Legal Troubles
Prabhavathi is not a stranger to legal issues. Earlier, she was involved in another case where she allegedly cheated by pledging imitation jewellery as real. These allegations were confirmed during her custody before the court, which has now remanded her.
The theft from the temple, a sacred place for locals, adds another layer of controversy around Prabhavathi's candidacy. Local residents and religious authorities are seeking clarity on how such an incident could occur in their community.
During the investigation, police highlighted that Prabhavathi's previous experience as part of the BJP local body elections underscores the need for greater scrutiny of candidates' backgrounds before they take office. The incident has raised questions about the ethical and financial practices within these community bodies.
