ODISHA, Bhubaneswar – In a recent development, the Odisha police department has initiated disciplinary action following the death of Sushant Sahu, a differently-abled individual from Subulia in Ganjam district. Allegations against the police's handling during Sahu's detention have led to the transfer and suspension of several personnel involved.

Suspending and Transferring Personnel

The Southern Range Inspector General, Niti Shekhar, has ordered the transfer of IPS officer Nitesh Mishra. Mishra was placed on provisional duty at the Ganjam district police headquarters pending further inquiry. Three policemen, including sub-inspector Sameer Kumar Rout, assistant sub-inspector Baikuntha Jena, and constable Suman Sahu from Balichhai outpost, have been suspended.

Preliminary investigations indicate that Sushant Sahu was detained by the police on May 25 in connection with a stone-blasting case. He was taken to Kabisuryanagar police station for questioning. Family members alleged his severe beating during custodial interrogation and claimed he was later handed over in critical condition.

Sahu's condition deteriorated while in hospital, leading to his death despite efforts at healthcare facilities. This incident has triggered public outrage, with calls for accountability and transparency from law enforcement officials.

Context of Custodial Death

The custodial detention and assault on a differently-abled individual highlight ongoing challenges within the Indian police force regarding treatment of marginalized groups. While cases such as this are unfortunately not unique, they underscore the need for stricter regulation and oversight mechanisms to prevent such incidents.
