Pune, India – In a significant bust of an illegal sex determination racket, two individuals have been arrested by the police. The prime accused is Annasaheb Giri (42), a Class 12-educated individual who used a portable Chinese-made ultrasound device linked to a mobile application for sex determination tests.
Operation and Charges
Giri claimed involvement in illegal activities since 2024, stating he never pursued higher education beyond the secondary level. He reportedly charged between ₹5,000 and ₹15,000 for conducting these tests and referred women seeking abortions to connected doctors.
A BAMS-qualified doctor named Atul Jadhav of Wagholi has also been arrested in this case, while two other medical practitioners are yet to be apprehended. This investigation has unveiled a sophisticated referral network designed to operate with high secrecy, making it challenging for law enforcement to identify beneficiaries and quantify the extent of illegal procedures.
Annasaheb Giri was the central figure in this operation, conducting around 30 to 50 examinations per month. When a female fetus was detected, he referred cases to other doctors involved. The police have seized the machine used in these operations and are still identifying additional parties linked to the racket.Narendra Thakare, who allegedly supplied the ultrasound machine to Giri, has also been arrested in a similar case elsewhere. Investigators continue their efforts to verify claims of illegal abortions and gather more evidence from digital communications.
