In West Bengal, a peculiar economic trend has emerged alongside the shifting political landscape, characterized by a significant egg price hike. As citizens express their growing dissatisfaction with political figures, reports indicate that eggs are increasingly being purchased not for consumption, but as a form of protest. This phenomenon, colloquially referred to as egg therapy, has gained traction as irate members of the public target various political representatives across the state.

The Surge in Egg Demand and Prices

According to data from the National Egg Coordination Committee (NECC), the retail price of a single egg has seen a sharp increase. In the first week of May, an egg was priced at five rupees; however, by the third week of June, the cost rose to seven rupees per piece, with official communiques noting a further climb to 7.84 rupees. This unexpected escalation is particularly notable given that the summer heat typically results in lower demand for poultry products.

Wholesale marketers have observed that the primary driver for this surge is the unconventional use of eggs by citizens. Individuals are purchasing large quantities to pelt at leaders from the All India Trinamul Congress (TMC), who have been accused of widespread corruption. The wholesale price for a crate of 225 eggs has risen from 1,180 rupees to 1,430 rupees, reflecting the sustained demand for these items as instruments of public frustration.

Protest Tactics and Political Fallout

The intensity of these incidents has reached various levels of government administration. High-ranking officials have confirmed that protests have targeted figures including Diamond Harbour MP Abhishek Bandopadhyay, as well as various gram panchayat heads and local spokespersons. The unrest has even extended to the residences of prominent leaders, such as the Kalighat home of Mamata Banerjee, and has occurred within court compounds during the movement of arrested political figures, such as Joy Prakash Majumdar.

Psychotherapists observing the trend suggest that the choice of throwing rotten eggs serves as a mechanism for common people to voice their anguish in a way that gains viral attention, while remaining within the limits of bailable offenses. Residents in areas like Jiagunj have even been reported waiting late into the night to confront political representatives with these protests.
