The Basavatarakam Indo American Cancer Hospital & Research Institute (BIACH&RI) recently achieved a significant milestone during its 26th Foundation Day celebrations. The institution, which has become a beacon of hope for cancer patients in Hyderabad, received over ₹1.03 crore in charitable contributions during the commemorative event held on Sunday. These funds are set to play a crucial role in advancing patient welfare and supporting the hospital’s ongoing development projects.
Substantial Support for Cancer Care
The most generous contribution arrived from Polavarapu Madhava Rao, a US-based NRI, whose family presented a cheque for ₹1 crore directly to the hospital chairman, Nandamuri Balakrishna. This remarkable Basavatarakam Hospital donation highlights the growing commitment of non-resident Indians toward bolstering domestic healthcare infrastructure. The event was further supported by other contributors, including Jilayat Ghouse Inayat from Anantapur and Sudhakar Naidu from Kurnool, who each donated ₹1 lakh, alongside Singarayam Ranjith Kumar from Khammam, who contributed ₹50,000.
During the ceremony, the hospital’s medical director, Dr. T.S. Rao, reflected on the institution’s quarter-century journey. The discussion underscored how the facility has evolved since its inception, consistently striving to provide accessible and quality oncological care. Board member J.S.R. Prasad acknowledged the vital role that such contributions play, confirming that the institution has ambitious expansion plans for both Hyderabad and Amaravati.
Fulfilling a Visionary Goal
The event also featured insights from Dr. Nori Dattatreyudu, who recounted the legacy of the late Basavatarakam. He noted that her initial concern regarding the limited access to cancer treatment, particularly for women, served as the founding inspiration for the hospital. The current growth and expansion of the institute are viewed as the successful realization of that long-held vision.
To mark this special occasion, Nandamuri Balakrishna expressed his deep appreciation for the medical, nursing, and paramedical staff, whom he referred to as his extended family. He introduced a new initiative titled Chairman’s Day, designed to facilitate regular annual meetings between the leadership and employees to foster a stronger institutional community. The celebration concluded with a variety of cultural performances, including a poignant mythological dance-drama performed by members of the hospital staff, symbolizing the institution's vibrant spirit and commitment to holistic healing.
