This marks multiple incidents since the ceasefire was established, highlighting tensions between the two nations over their nuclear programs and sanctions negotiations.

US Military Strikes Iran Amid Ongoing Ceasefire

Highlights

  • U.S. conducts 'self-defence strikes' on Iranian missile launch sites and boats in southern Iran
  • Strikes aim to protect troops near strategically important Strait of Hormuz
  • Progress made in U.S.-Iran ceasefire negotiations, but disagreements persist over sanctions and nuclear programs
  • Iran agreed, in principle, to give up its stockpile of highly enriched uranium

The U.S. military has carried out 'self-defence strikes' targeting Iranian missile launch sites and boats in southern Iran, near the strategic Strait of Hormuz, according to a statement from US Central Command (CENTCOM). The attacks come amid an ongoing ceasefire between both nations.

In his statement, CENTCOM spokesman Timothy Hawkins confirmed that U.S. forces struck these targets to protect their troops from potential threats posed by Iranian forces. The specific goals included thwarting missile launches and stopping boats attempting to deploy mines. Though the U.S. continues to defend its forces during this period, Hawkins noted they are exercising restraint.

Previous Incidents & Negotiations

U.S. and Iranian forces have exchanged fire multiple times since an initial ceasefire was established. In early May, the U.S. had already struck several Iranian military facilities believed to be involved in unauthorized attacks on American warships in the Strait of Hormuz.

The latest developments follow progress made in recent negotiations between Washington and Tehran. President Donald Trump announced that Iran's enrichment uranium will either be turned over to the U.S. for destruction or destroyed at an agreed location, a move aimed at reducing regional tensions.

According to Trump's statement on Truth Social: 'The enriched Uranium (Nuclear Dust!) will either be immediately turned over to the United States to be brought home and destroyed or, preferably, in conjunction with Iran, destroyed in place or, at another acceptable location, with the Atomic Energy Commission, or their equivalent, being witness to this process and event.'

While this decision addresses a significant hurdle in negotiations regarding Iran's nuclear program, disagreements still remain over language on the lifting of sanctions. These talks are ongoing and complex, with both sides expressing mixed sentiments about the pace of progress.
