Dozens of Palestinians gathered on Thursday for funeral prayers, honoring the memory of 10 individuals killed in Israeli strikes on Wednesdays. The mourners included the family members of five children and an elderly person, as well as a Hamas militant named Imad Isleim. Mohammed Shawish, one of the victims who lost his wife, broke down at Shifa Hospital, holding her body tightly as he spoke with reporters about their love connection.
These strikes occurred during Eid al-Adha, an Islamic holiday celebrated worldwide by millions of Muslims. Across the Gaza Strip, 16 people were killed and 39 wounded over the last 48 hours, according to Gaza's health ministry. This came after an earlier strike that killed Mohammed Odeh, recently appointed leader of Hamas' military wing, Qassam Brigades.
Expanding Israeli Grip on Gaza
In response to these events, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated in a speech at the Jordan Valley Conference that Israel was expanding its control over the Gaza Strip. He asserted, "Right now we are tightening the grip on Hamas." Netanyahu outlined plans for increasing control from 50% to 60%, with further ambitions of reaching 70%. He emphasized the importance of continuing to leverage Israel's power in the region.
The conference was part of a broader discussion regarding Iran, Hezbollah, and Gaza's ongoing conflict. The Israeli military claims it is acting in self-defense, but critics argue that such measures escalate tensions unnecessarily and harm innocent civilians. Since last October, 922 people have been killed in Gaza under these conditions.
