Recent official data confirms that 735 doctors across the state have been defrauded of a staggering Rs 30 crore since September 2024. In response to this mounting financial crisis, the Telangana Cyber Security Bureau (TGCSB) convened a high-level meeting in Hyderabad to address the medical fraternity.
Rising Cyber Fraud Threats Against Medical Professionals
The awareness session was led by TGCSB Director Shikha Goel, who stressed that no individual is immune to these sophisticated digital crimes. Despite being highly educated and professionally successful, doctors are increasingly being targeted by criminals. During the discussion, officials emphasized that maintaining constant vigilance and reporting incidents promptly are essential defensive measures in today’s volatile cyber fraud environment.
Data shared during the meeting revealed that investment and business-related schemes have caused the most significant damage. Specifically, 127 victims lost a total of Rs 22.39 crore through these illicit channels. The broader list of crimes reported by the affected doctors includes complex schemes such as digital arrest scams, identity theft, impersonation, and various advertisement-based frauds. Furthermore, professionals have reported falling prey to job-related scams, sextortion, insurance fraud, UPI scams, cryptocurrency cheating, and matrimonial fraud.
Strategic Response and Future Safeguards
The initiative brought together 72 key representatives, including senior office bearers from major medical bodies like the associations of cardiologists, paediatricians, dentists, and orthopaedic surgeons. The primary goal was to enhance collaboration between the TGCSB and the medical sector to develop effective preventive strategies against emerging digital threats.
Authorities underscored the critical nature of the 'golden hour'—the immediate window following a financial fraud. They urged victims to contact the 1930 cybercrime helpline or use the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal as soon as a suspicious transaction occurs. Such timely action significantly increases the probability of freezing accounts and retrieving stolen assets.
Moving forward, the medical community has pledged to launch a coordinated effort to raise awareness.
