Tension escalated in the Anantapur district of Andhra Pradesh after a stone-pelting incident disrupted a Muharram procession on Saturday. The disturbance occurred within PC Pyapili village, located in the Vajrakarur mandal, requiring local law enforcement to take immediate action to restore public order.
According to reports from the local police, the conflict began during the traditional Peerla (Muharram) procession. The disagreement reportedly stemmed from a dispute between two distinct groups regarding the execution of the Alaayi Tokkadam ritual. One group insisted on performing the ceremony directly in front of the moving procession, while the other group strongly objected, leading to a heated argument that quickly devolved into physical confrontation.
Escalation of Violence and Police Intervention
The situation deteriorated rapidly as members of both participating groups began engaging in stone-pelting. Law enforcement personnel stationed at the location attempted to intervene and stabilize the volatile situation, but they also became targets of the violence. Reports indicate that several officers sustained injuries while attempting to manage the stone-pelting incident.
To disperse the gathering crowd and regain control of the village streets, the police were compelled to initiate a lathi charge. Following the escalation, authorities dispatched additional police forces to PC Pyapili to ensure security remained intact. Senior district officials closely monitored the developments throughout the day. By the late hours, law enforcement authorities confirmed that the situation had been successfully brought under control.
While the disturbance occurred in this specific village, other areas of the region saw peaceful observances. Thousands of devotees, representing both the Hindu and Muslim communities, gathered for Muharram celebrations at the historic Gugudu Kullaya Swamy Temple situated in the Narpala mandal. The Endowments Department made comprehensive logistical arrangements to support the large influx of participants. To assist attendees, the APSRTC operated special bus services from various locations across the district, ensuring that the religious events at the temple proceeded without further issue.
