Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah hosted a breakfast meeting for his cabinet colleagues on Thursday, raising speculation about a possible leadership change in the state. The event took place at Siddaramaiah's official residence just days after it was reported that he intends to step down to pave way for Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar.

Potential Resignation and Party Repercussions

The 77-year-old veteran leader reportedly sought the Governor's appointment, following the party high command requesting him to make room for a leadership transition. Despite meeting with his deputy at Delhi and other senior leaders on Wednesday, Siddaramaiah did not immediately accept the central role offered within the Congress.

The political atmosphere in Karnataka is intensifying as AICC General Secretary Randeep Singh Surjewala clarified that no decisions were taken for a legislative party meeting yet. The Legislature Party would select its leader, potentially making Shivakumar the new Chief Minister after two and a half years under the "rotational chief minister" formula.

However, this might not sit well with all factions of the Congress, particularly those representing backward communities. Karnataka State Federation of Backward Class Communities warned severe repercussions for any possible replacement of Siddaramaiah, noting his pivotal role in securing the state's support historically.

In contrast, Shivakumar supporters celebrated across Bengaluru and Ramanagara on Wednesday, while opponents protested outside Siddaramaiah's residence, reflecting the deep-seated rivalry between the two leaders. With political maneuvering heating up, stakeholders await further developments with keen interest.
