Security Concerns Arise Over Use of Construction Materials in Darul Shifa Restoration

Highlights

  • Heritage site Darul Shifa directs lime mortar over cement in its construction efforts
  • Decision made following activists' complaints about unauthorized methods
  • Restoration work at the 1590-built historical site to maintain true architectural integrity
  • Efforts ensure future generations can appreciate authentic historical significance

Following complaints about the potential damage to a 400-year-old historical site, the Telangana Heritage Department has directed GHMC contractors to revert their materials and use lime mortar for restoration work at Darul Shifa.

According to N. Narsingh, deputy director (engineering), who inspected the site, the instructions have been given not because Darul Shifa is a protected monument but due to concerns raised by activists about adherence to archaeological norms. Half of the structural work had already incorporated cement, but now lime mortar will be used for stucco-related tasks to preserve the originality and integrity of the 1590s-era hospital.

Concerns Raised About Modern Construction Methods

The heritage site has faced issues with unauthorized construction practices. Use of cement in historical renovations is a common concern due to its irreversible effect on traditional masonry structures. Activists argue that the use of lime mortar, an age-old technique, better aligns with preserving such ancient edifices.

Narsingh highlighted that the guidance was issued after the engineering wing thoroughly examined the site and deemed it necessary for cultural preservation. "We are restoring Darul Shifa while ensuring it reflects its original architectural authenticity," he explained.

The heritage preservation efforts aim to maintain historical sites like Darul Shifa, which dates back to 1590 when Hyderabad was founded. These actions ensure that future generations can appreciate the rich cultural history of the region without compromising on the integrity of such important landmarks.

The decision underscores the commitment to using traditional methods in conservation projects, thereby maintaining the authenticity and historical significance of sites like Darul Shifa.
