New Delhi: On Monday, the Government of India unveiled a significant financial boost through the emergency credit line guarantee scheme (ECLGS), sanctioning a total of ₹35,000 crore to support small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) and airlines impacted by the geopolitical crisis in West Asia. The scheme was formally approved back in May 2026 with an ambitious aim of providing additional credit flows worth ₹2.55 lakh crore, including a dedicated package of ₹5,000 crore for the aviation sector.

The financial assistance is being facilitated through banks, who have processed approximately 80,000 loan applications so far. Manoj Muttathil Ayyappan, Joint Secretary at the Department of Financial Services, reported that loans totaling ₹35,194 crore and guarantees worth ₹15,720 crore had been issued as of May 29. This scheme is designed to be digitally integrated, ensuring expedited loan disbursements within a timeframe of just 5-7 days post-application.

Why This Scheme Matters

SMEs and airlines are crucial components of India's economy. The government's initiative aims to restore much-needed liquidity and prevent job losses, while fostering uninterrupted production lines and maintaining economic resilience in the face of global challenges. Muttathil Ayyappan highlighted that ECLGS 5.0, with an allocation of ₹18,100 crore, will address this critical need.

Airlines can now apply for up to 100% of their peak credit needs, capped at ₹1,500 crore, while institutions like airports and airline maintenance facilities are eligible for a working capital fund-based limit of up to ₹100 crore, covering 20% of their funds. The scheme's broad yet flexible guidelines make it more accessible to a wider range of MSME customers.

The goal is clear: to provide timely financial support and sustain the operations necessary for economic stability. This move not only injects confidence but also aligns with broader government initiatives aimed at stimulating domestic production and fostering sustainable recovery through robust financial backing.
