Rohit Pawar is currently on an indefinite hunger strike in Pandharpur, advocating for a comprehensive farm loan waiver that removes what he considers to be overly stringent eligibility requirements in the state's recently announced assistance package.
Demands for Broader Agrarian Relief
The core of the dispute lies in the government's Punyashlok Ahilyadevi Holkar Shetkari Karja-mukti Yojana, which was approved by the Maharashtra Cabinet on June 2. While the scheme intends to benefit over 55 lakh cultivators, Rohit Pawar contends that existing conditions could disqualify more than 37 lakh farmers from receiving necessary aid. He is pushing for a blanket waiver to ensure that those struggling with significant debt are not excluded by bureaucratic hurdles.
Support for the agitation has grown, with prominent Maratha reservation activist Manoj Jarange Patil visiting the protest site to express solidarity. On Sunday morning, his blood sugar levels were recorded at 83 mg/dL, and his blood pressure was 95/70 mmHg, indicating a decline as the fast persists. The Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) coalition continues to stand by the demand, urging the state authorities to reconsider the criteria imposed on the farm loan waiver scheme to provide broader coverage to the agricultural community facing severe financial instability.
