Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) has called off a victory parade to celebrate their second consecutive Indian Premier League (IPL) title win, citing security concerns. After last year's deadly stampede near Chinnaswamy Stadium, the franchise decided not to risk public celebrations, especially given the imminent swearing-in ceremony of Chief Minister DK Shivakumar at Lok Bhavan.
Security and Swearing-In Ceremony Considerations
The upcoming political function is scheduled for 4.10 PM on a day when the stadium's proximity to the Governor's residence will draw a massive crowd. The ceremony, with several dignitaries in attendance, necessitates significant police deployment which could have strained resources needed for post-match celebrations.
"It is highly unlikely that there will be any public activities in Bengaluru," an RCB official stated to PTI, highlighting the adherence to ongoing guidelines and city advisories. Officials from the Bengaluru City Police Advisory urged fans to avoid celebrating loudly or disrupting peace on city streets.
Moreover, key players like RCB's Devdutt Padikkal must join the Indian Test squad for an upcoming match in Mullanpur against Afghanistan. Other international commitments from Australian, New Zealand, and West Indies teams mean no public outpouring of joy during these times.
Remembering Tragic Past
The decision was not made in isolation but reflects the lessons learned from June 4, 2025, when a sudden victory parade after RCB's first title win led to 11 fatalities. The incident invoked public outrage and judicial intervention, leading authorities to tighten regulations regarding outdoor celebrations.
"We will not allow public celebrations... If anyone wants to celebrate, they can do it indoors," emphasized Bengaluru City Police Commissioner Seemanth Kumar Singh in a statement. This ensures that public safety remains the priority as RCB strives for communal harmony and security amid civic duties.
