ANDHRA PRADESH Southern Power Distribution Company Limited (APSPDCL) has launched a prepaid smart power supply system for 34,496 government electricity connections across various districts. This move aims to ensure uninterrupted power supply and improve transparency in billing while addressing overdue payments from government institutions.

The prepaid metering system covers entities such as educational institutions, municipalities, water works, street lighting, and other public services within APSPDCL's jurisdiction, including Nellore, Tirupati, Chittoor, Annamayya, Kadapa, Kurnool, Nandyal, Anantapur, and Sri Sathya Sai districts. As of the rollout date, these institutions had already paid approximately ₹15 crore through e-wallets to manage their upcoming electricity bills.

Transparency and Efficiency in Billing

The prepaid system is designed to promote regular monitoring and management of power consumption by government departments. According to APSPDCL's chairman, CMD Sivasankar Lotheti, the meters have been installed at 4,735 institutions in Nellore, 4,942 in Tirupati, 4,193 in Chittoor, 4,324 in Annamayya, 4,520 in Kadapa, 2,829 in Anantapur, 2,432 in Sri Sathya Sai, 3,243 in Kurnool, and 3,278 in Nandyal.

Cmd explained that electricity charges will be deducted daily from the pre-paid balances. SMS and email alerts will notify departments when their balance reaches a minimum level. CMD Lotheti also highlighted e-wallet services for recharging prepaid meters, ensuring efficient payment processes.

Impact of Prepaid Metering

The change is expected to enhance power supply reliability by aligning consumption with payments more effectively. By reducing overdue bills, the initiative helps APSPDCL plan its power purchase and manage finances better. The system also offers a clearer way for departments to control their electricity expenses and improve accountability in energy usage.

Cmd Sivasankar Lotheti advised that timely recharging is crucial to avoid service disruptions, ensuring continued operation of essential public services without interruptions.
