A new nutritional initiative, Balamrutham Plus, was officially inaugurated on Saturday in Salur, located within the Parvathipuram Manyam district. The program was launched by the Women and Child Welfare Minister, Gummidi Sandhya Rani, as part of a strategic effort to combat child malnutrition across the state. This pilot project represents a significant step in the regional government's broader mission to foster a healthier generation through targeted medical and nutritional support.
Objectives and Implementation of Balamrutham Plus
The core objective of Balamrutham Plus is to improve the health outcomes for vulnerable children by addressing nutritional deficiencies at an early age. During the launch event, Minister Gummidi Sandhya Rani highlighted the government’s unwavering commitment to achieving a Malnutrition-Free Andhra Pradesh. The program functions under the Community-Based Management of Acute Malnutrition (CMAM) framework, which is designed to provide direct interventions to those most in need.
This initiative is a collaborative effort involving the Women and Child Welfare Department, the Vijayavani Charitable Foundation (VCF), and Tata Trusts. The pilot phase is scheduled to span a 24-month period and will be implemented across three specific districts: NTR, Parvathipuram Manyam, and Tirupati. By focusing on these regions, the stakeholders aim to create a replicable model for other parts of the state.
Targeting Child Malnutrition with Nutritional Support
The program is specifically designed for approximately 5,000 children, ranging in age from seven months to five years, who have been identified as suffering from either Severe Acute Malnutrition (SAM) or Moderate Acute Malnutrition (MAM). To combat these issues, each participant will be provided with three kilograms of Energy Dense Nutritious Food (EDNF) every month. This supplement is intended to support healthy physical and cognitive development in growing children.
Minister Gummidi Sandhya Rani emphasized the necessity of a coordinated approach to ensure the success of the Balamrutham Plus program. She issued clear directives to field-level staff, healthcare professionals, and Anganwadi workers to diligently identify every eligible child in the targeted districts. Ensuring an uninterrupted supply chain for these nutritional supplements is considered a top priority to maintain the efficacy of the treatment. Government officials confirmed that the project will undergo rigorous monitoring over the two-year duration. Future expansion of the program to additional districts across Andhra Pradesh will be determined based on the performance and health outcomes observed during this pilot phase, with the ultimate goal of significantly reducing growth deficiencies in young children throughout the state.
